"Governor Abbott and GOP Governors Stand Firm on Texas Border Sovereignty"

Republican governors, led by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, are invoking a legal theory similar to the one used by slave states to justify secession before the Civil War, in their conflict with the Biden administration over the southern border. They argue that the federal government has violated the "compact" with the states, justifying state usurpation of federal authority at the border. This rhetoric, reminiscent of the Confederacy's conception of the Constitution as a mere compact, is being used to legitimize nullification and dehumanization, and has led to armed standoffs between state and federal law enforcement at the border.

Fort Benning renamed in honor of military couple.

The U.S. Army training base Fort Benning in Georgia has been renamed Fort Moore in honor of Lt. Gen. Harold “Hal” Moore and his wife, Julia “Julie” Moore, as part of a larger effort by the military to remove associations with the Confederacy. Harold Moore commanded the 7th Cavalry Regiment stationed at the base during the Vietnam War, while his wife served as an advocate for military families. The base’s redesignation comes after Fort Hood was renamed Fort Cavazos on Tuesday and Fort Lee was renamed Fort Gregg-Adams last month to similarly remove associations with their original Confederate namesakes.
