The U.S. military has completed the renaming of nine installations that previously honored Confederate generals, with the final redesignation of Fort Gordon in Georgia to Fort Eisenhower. The renaming process was part of the recommendations made by the congressionally mandated Naming Commission, which identified items in the military named after figures from the Confederacy. The new names honor individuals such as President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Lt. Gen. Hal Moore. The Army has also renamed streets and buildings on military installations, with the goal of completing all re-designations by January 1, 2024. The cost of implementing the recommendations is estimated to be around $62.5 million.
