"Reevaluating Memorial Day: Origins, Meaning, and Modern Reflections"
Memorial Day, originally called "Decoration Day," was proposed by Gen. John A. Logan in 1868 to honor war dead, inspired by Southern women decorating Confederate graves. While officially started in Waterloo, N.Y., many Southern cities, including Columbus, Ga., claim to be the true birthplace. Historians argue the holiday's origins are less about who did it first and more about the widespread Confederate grave-decorating that Logan co-opted.
