Christopher James Campbell, an American volunteer who moved to Ukraine to fight in the war against Russia, was killed defending the city of Bakhmut. He is one of at least nine Americans known to have died in Ukraine since the invasion began in February 2022. Campbell's funeral was held in Kyiv, where he was praised for his bravery and dedication to helping Ukraine. Cooper "Harris" Andrews, a US Marine veteran, was killed in Ukraine while defending evacuees alongside others who were killed during a battle for a crucial road to Bakmut. Andrews joined the Foreign Legion, a group of foreign fighters assisting Ukrainian forces since being invaded by Russia. He served in the Marines from January 2017 to Jan. 16, 2022, before being discharged as a ground electronics transmission systems maintainer and traveling to Ukraine.

Cooper “Harris” Andrews, a former US Marine, was killed by a mortar attack on the outskirts of Bakhmut, Ukraine while assisting in the evacuation of civilians from the city. Andrews worked for an activist group known as the Resistance Committee and had joined the Foreign Legion in Ukraine. The US Department of State confirmed the death of a US citizen in Ukraine without naming the individual.
