Unearthing Pompeii's Disturbing Prison Bakery: A Shocking Glimpse into Ancient Slavery

Archaeologists excavating in Pompeii have uncovered a disturbing bakery-prison where enslaved workers and blind-folded donkeys were confined and exploited to produce bread. The cramped workspace, equipped with small windows secured by iron bars, suggests the presence of individuals of servile status whose freedom of movement was restricted. The discovery of three victims in one of the bakery's rooms indicates that the property still housed individuals at the time of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79. This finding aligns with the accounts of backbreaking labor endured by slaves in ancient mills and bakeries described by the writer Apuleius.

Unearthed Tablets Reveal Ancient Language in Cultic Ritual Text

Archaeologists excavating the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Boğazköy-Hattusha in northern Turkey have discovered a previously unknown language within a "cultic ritual text" written in Hittite. The Hittites, one of the world's oldest civilizations, were known for recording rituals in foreign languages. The language, believed to be from the area once called Kalašma, is largely incomprehensible and is being studied further. This is the fourth language found among the clay tablets, with previous discoveries including Luwian, Palaic, and Hattic languages. The study of Hittite languages can shed light on the origins of Western civilization.

Egypt bans Dutch archaeologists over controversial museum exhibition.

A Dutch museum's archaeology team has been banned from carrying out excavations in Egypt's Saqqara necropolis after the museum mounted an exhibition that drew condemnation from Egyptian authorities. The National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden received an email from the head of foreign missions of the Egyptian Antiquities Service saying that the museum is "falsifying history" with its "Afrocentric" approach. The museum has been carrying out annual excavations there for more than 40 years. Its most recent excavation campaign took place earlier this year, between February 19 and March 23.
