"Ongoing Hospitalization of Two Victims in Fatal Botulism Outbreak"

Two patients in a botulism outbreak in France remain hospitalized, while six have been discharged. The outbreak, which occurred during the Rugby World Cup, affected 15 people from multiple countries. The source of infection was traced back to locally produced canned sardines consumed at a restaurant in Bordeaux. The patients required mechanical ventilation due to respiratory muscle paralysis, and botulism antitoxin was administered. The investigation found that the sardines from the restaurant tested positive for botulinum neurotoxin type B. Public health measures were taken to stop the outbreak, and authorities alerted medical practitioners and assessed the possible risk outside of France.
