Meningitis Outbreak Threatens Upstate Children

Children in Upstate South Carolina are increasingly affected by meningitis, which can be deadly or cause severe health issues. Health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination and good hygiene practices to prevent the spread, especially as vaccination rates decline. Enterovirus, which has no vaccine, is also prevalent and can cause serious illness, highlighting the need for preventive measures like handwashing and not sharing personal items.

WHO Reports Deadly Virus Infection in Babies Across Multiple Countries Raises Concern Among U.S. Doctors

The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported dozens of cases of dangerous and often deadly viral sepsis in babies across Europe, caused by a rare type of enterovirus called echovirus-11. At least 26 infants in Croatia, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom have been infected, with eight deaths reported. Pediatric infectious diseases experts in the US are concerned about the increasing circulation of similar viruses and the potential for a surge in enteroviruses this summer. Enteroviruses can severely affect newborns, and there is no active reporting system for neonatal enteroviral disease in the US. Doctors are urging vigilance and awareness among pediatricians and families with newborns, as enteroviruses can cause severe illness and complications in infants. Treatment options are limited, and research is underway to better understand the viruses and develop effective antiviral medications.

U.S. doctors alarmed by WHO report on deadly virus in babies

The World Health Organization has raised concerns about echovirus-11, a type of enterovirus that has caused severe illness and death among newborns in France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. Nine babies in France developed organ failure and sepsis, resulting in seven deaths. In Italy, two infants were infected, with one still in intensive care. In the UK, coxsackievirus led to severe heart inflammation in 10 babies, resulting in one death. While there has been a slight rise in enterovirus infections among children in the US, most cases have mild symptoms. Parents are advised to watch for symptoms such as trouble breathing, poor feeding, fussiness, and pale or blotchy skin in newborns and seek medical attention if concerned.

France Reports Enterovirus Outbreak

France has reported an increase in cases of severe neonatal sepsis associated with Enterovirus (Echovirus-11 (E-11)). A total of nine cases of neonatal sepsis with hepatic impairment and multi-organ failure were reported between July 2022 and April 2023 from four hospitals in three regions of France. As of 5 May 2023, seven cases have died and two were still hospitalized in neonatal unit. The current increase in incidence and severity in neonates, associated with a recombinant lineage of E-11 that previously was not detected in France, and is considered unusual due to the extremely rapid deterioration and associated case fatality rate amongst the affected babies. WHO assesses the public health risk for the general population to be low, despite the concerning nature of the increase.

Spike in 'Harmless' Virus Leaves One Baby Dead and Eight Fighting for Life.

One baby has died and eight others have been hospitalized due to severe myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle, caused by enterovirus, a typically harmless virus. Health officials have reported 15 cases of the condition in newborns and infants in Wales and England between June 2022 and March 2023. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the spike in cases, which has left health officials baffled. The World Health Organization has labeled the spike as "unusual" and warned that if more cases emerge, childcare facilities and schools should close.
