Tunisian Islamist opposition leader Ghannouchi detained by judge.
Rached Ghannouchi, the leader of Tunisia's main opposition party, Ennahdha, has been imprisoned pending trial on charges of incitement against state authorities. The charges are believed to be politically motivated, part of a wider campaign against opponents of President Kaid Saied, who dissolved the democratically-elected parliament and started ruling by decree in 2021. Ghannouchi, who has been an ardent critic of Saied, founded Ennahdha in 1981 and returned to Tunisia from exile in 2011 after longtime leader Ben Ali fled the country.
