The Role of Emotion Dysregulation in Overprotective Parenting and Social Anxiety
Overprotective parenting is linked to higher levels of social anxiety in adolescents, and a new study suggests that emotion dysregulation may be the key factor connecting the two. Researchers found that adolescents who perceived their parents as more overprotective were more likely to report higher levels of social anxiety. Overprotective parenting was associated with emotional dysregulation and suppression, which were both linked to higher levels of social anxiety. However, emotional integration was not found to be significant in this relationship. The findings highlight the importance of including parents in therapy for adolescents and addressing their behaviors and emotion socialization strategies.
