Tropical Storm Philippe is moving west towards the eastern Caribbean but is expected to weaken due to increasing wind shear. Meanwhile, a tropical depression is likely to form off Africa and follow Philippe. The system off Africa has a 90% chance of developing within seven days. So far this hurricane season, there have been 16 named storms, including three major hurricanes.
Tropical Storm Bret is approaching the eastern Caribbean at near-hurricane strength, with a hurricane watch issued for St. Lucia. The storm is expected to bring torrential downpours, landslides and flooding to the region. Airports, businesses, schools and offices have closed in St. Lucia and Dominica. A tropical storm warning is in effect for Dominica, St. Lucia and Martinique, while a tropical storm watch has been issued for Barbados and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The storm is expected to lose strength once it enters the eastern Caribbean Sea and is forecast to dissipate by Saturday.
Tropical Storm Bret is expected to hit several eastern Caribbean islands on Thursday at near hurricane strength, with up to 10 inches of rain forecasted from the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe south to Grenada and Barbados. A tropical storm watch was in effect for Barbados, Martinique and Dominica, as officials in the region urged people to prepare for Bret. The government of Guadeloupe warned that inclement weather would start Thursday morning and continue until late Friday, with waves of up to 11 feet.
