"Jayapal Announces Congressional Run, Blumenauer Retires from Congress"
Susheela Jayapal, a Multnomah County Commissioner, has announced her candidacy for Congress to replace U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, who will not seek reelection. Jayapal, a first-generation Indian American, is the first Democrat to enter the race for the 3rd Congressional District. She emphasized the need for a progressive voice in Congress to combat extremist ideologies and promote a thriving and equitable community. Other potential candidates, including former Multnomah County Board of Commissioners chair Deborah Kafoury, have not ruled out running for the seat. Jayapal's sister, Pramila Jayapal, currently serves in Congress representing Seattle.
