A new study using simulations suggests that wide-orbit planets, including the hypothetical Planet Nine, form naturally during the chaotic early stages of planetary system development in star clusters, with gravitational interactions and environmental factors trapping some planets in distant orbits, and this process may explain the existence of rogue planets as well.
