"High-Speed Camera Freezes Chaotic Moments in a Trillionth of a Second"

Scientists have developed a camera with a shutter speed a trillionth of a second, allowing them to capture dynamic disorder in materials. The camera, called vsPDF, uses neutrons to measure the position of atoms and provides insights into the movement and behavior of atoms within materials. By studying materials like germanium telluride, researchers can better understand their properties and develop improved thermoelectric materials. While the vsPDF technique shows promise, further development is needed before it becomes a widely used testing method.

Chaos Captured: Trillionth-of-a-Second Camera Shutter Speed.

Physicists from the University of Gothenburg have developed an ultrafast laser camera that can create videos at 12.5 billion images per second, while another camera with a trillionth-of-a-second shutter speed is able to photograph atomic activity, including "dynamic disorder." The latter camera uses neutrons to measure the position of atoms, rather than conventional photography techniques, and is referred to as variable shutter atomic pair distribution function (vsPDF). These new cameras provide more insight into the properties and reactions of materials.
