"Controversy Surrounds Alabama's First-Ever Nitrogen Gas Execution"

Alabama inmate Kenneth Smith is set to be the first person executed by nitrogen gas, but his lawyers are appealing to a federal court to block the untested method, arguing that it could subject him to an agonizing death and violates his due process rights. The state contends that the nitrogen gas will cause unconsciousness within seconds and death within minutes. Smith's attorneys also argue that the state violated his due process rights by scheduling the execution while he has pending appeals. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall's office is asking the court to let the execution proceed, while Smith has also asked the U.S. Supreme Court to stay the execution.

Residents of West Town Sue Chicago Officials to Halt Migrant Shelter

Two neighbors in Ukrainian Village have filed a lawsuit against Mayor Brandon Johnson and other city officials to temporarily halt the conversion of a privately owned building into a migrant shelter. The plaintiffs argue that the city has bypassed zoning and building permit regulations and violated their due process rights. The lawsuit demands that the city withdraw its plans until it complies with existing zoning and construction laws. The building, which is zoned for a neighborhood commercial district, has not received any special use approval for a temporary shelter. The lawsuit also raises concerns about the lack of transparency and potential impact on property values.

Trump's Plea to Dismiss Hush Money Charges in New York

Former President Donald Trump's lawyers have urged a New York judge to dismiss criminal charges related to hush money payments, arguing that the indictment was filed years after the conduct at issue and interfered with Trump's ongoing presidential campaign. They also seek a hearing to inquire about grand jury leaks and obtain more specific information about the prosecution's evidence. Trump was indicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, relating to how he reimbursed his former attorney Michael Cohen for a payment to Stormy Daniels. His lawyers claim the records were personal, not business, and the payments came from his own pocket.

Supreme Court supports Rodney Reed's DNA testing bid for innocence.

The Supreme Court has allowed Texas death row inmate Rodney Reed to seek post-conviction DNA evidence to prove his innocence in the 1998 killing of Stacey Stites. Reed claims an all-White jury wrongly convicted him, and celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Rihanna have expressed support. The ruling puts a new focus on DNA crime-scene evidence and when an inmate can make a claim to access the technology in a plea of innocence. Kavanaugh delivered the opinion of the court, and Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch dissented.

Lawmakers' visits to D.C. jail holding Jan. 6 defendants spark controversy.

Members of the House Oversight Committee toured a Washington D.C. jail holding Jan. 6 defendants, with Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene claiming the inmates were being "treated as political prisoners," while Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett "didn't see anything that was alarming." The Washington Corrections Department is holding 20 people charged in connection with the Jan. 6 riot, with nine of the 20 convicted or having pleaded guilty, and just three defendants at the D.C. jail not charged with physically assaulting law enforcement officers during the attack on the Capitol.
