Mercedes Introduces Turquoise Lights for Autonomous Driving

Mercedes-Benz has received approval to add turquoise blue lights to its autonomous vehicles in California and Nevada, indicating when the car is driving itself. The Drive Pilot system allows drivers to take their eyes off the road and engage in other activities until the system alerts them to take over. The specific blue shade is recommended by the Society of Automotive Engineers to signify autonomous vehicle operation. The lights aim to alert passing drivers and police that the vehicle is under fully automated control, ensuring safety and preventing misunderstandings. The technology will be available on select Mercedes models in California and Nevada starting in early 2024.

Mercedes leads the way with Level 3 self-driving vehicles in California.

Mercedes-Benz has become the first automaker to receive permission from California regulators to sell or lease vehicles with Level 3 self-driving technology on designated roads. The Drive Pilot system will allow drivers to take their eyes off the road and hands off the wheel, but only under certain conditions and on specific roads. The system relies on sensors installed throughout the vehicle and will be available on 2024 S-Class and EQS Sedan models, with deliveries slated for later this year.

Mercedes-Benz wins California's approval for Level 3 autonomous driving.

Mercedes-Benz's Level 3 autonomous driver assist system, DRIVE PILOT, has been certified to operate in California, making it the second state in the US to allow the technology. Unlike Level 2 ADAS systems, DRIVE PILOT enables the driver to take their hands off the wheel and eyes off the road, with the vehicle liable for anything that happens. Mercedes-Benz's EVs equipped with DRIVE PILOT are loaded with fail-safes in case one system struggles, making it one of the few automakers to achieve Level 3 autonomous driving certification from the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
