"Extremists Abduct Over 200 Women and Children in Northeastern Nigeria"

Islamic extremists have abducted over 200 people, mostly women and children displaced by violence, who were searching for firewood in northeastern Nigeria. The victims had left displacement camps in Borno state and were ambushed near the border with Chad. The U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Nigeria called for the immediate release of the victims, emphasizing the disproportionate impact of the conflict on women and girls. The attack is a grim reminder of the ongoing violence in the region, where at least 35,000 people have been killed and over 2 million displaced.

Ramadan fasting in drought-stricken Somalia

More than 1 million Somalis have fled their homes in search of help due to the longest drought on record in Somalia, coinciding with Ramadan. Food prices have increased for a country already struggling with inflation caused in part by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the withering of local crops by five consecutive failed rainy seasons. Millions of livestock that are central to people’s diets have died. For Ramadan, many displaced Somalis rely on well-wishers to provide their single meal a day. The imams of the mosques in Mogadishu are leading efforts to encourage the city’s wealthy and others who can afford it to sympathize with the poor and give generously.
