Breakthrough Toothpaste Could Eliminate Severe Peanut Allergies

A special toothpaste containing small amounts of peanuts may soon be available to help desensitize people with peanut allergies. In a small trial, all participants tolerated the highest dose of the peanut toothpaste without any moderate or severe reactions. The toothpaste, known as Oral Mucosal Immunotherapy (OMIT), delivers allergenic peanut proteins to the oral cavity, allowing for targeted delivery and simple administration. This method has the potential to desensitize patients to peanuts without requiring numerous clinic visits over several years. Further testing is needed before the toothpaste can be made available to patients.

Skin patch shows potential in treating peanut allergies in children.

A study involving 362 children aged 1 to 3 found that wearing a patch that dispenses a tiny amount of peanut protein for a year can help build up protection against accidental exposure to peanuts. Two-thirds of the children who wore the patch were successfully desensitized, compared to one-third of those who received a placebo. The patch tested is called Viaskin made by French pharmaceutical firm DBV Technologies, which hopes the results will help secure FDA approval in the US.

'Peanut patch' offers hope for toddlers with severe allergies

An experimental skin patch called Viaskin Peanut has shown promise in treating severe peanut allergies in children under the age of 4, according to a Phase 3 trial by DBV Technologies. The patch is coated with a small amount of peanut protein that is absorbed into the skin and worn between the shoulder blades of a toddler. After one year of treatment, about 67 percent of those who received the real skin patch were able to ingest more peanuts than they could before. Peanut allergies are one of the most common allergies children have in the United States.
