Investigation launched into death of 15-year-old in DCYF custody.

A 15-year-old foster child, Steyci Perez, died of an apparent overdose after being given fentanyl by a man who left her to die at a friend's house in Providence. Perez had been placed in the Providence home of her stepmother by the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) two months ago. She had run away for several days before being found intoxicated and taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital. Perez and another girl were taken to a motel by a man who gave them pills allegedly laced with fentanyl. The younger girl vomited up the pill, but Perez, who had not eaten, could not and fell unconscious. She was taken to a friend's apartment where she died. The state Child Advocate's office will investigate Perez's death.
