Rising CO2 tightens nitrogen supply in boreal forests, limiting growth
Using δ15N chronologies from 1,609 Swedish tree cores (1951–2017), the study shows rising atmospheric CO2 is the strongest predictor of declining soil nitrogen availability, signaling boreal forest oligotrophication that could limit future growth and carbon storage, even where nitrogen deposition is low.
