Researchers believe someone in central Ohio has been infected with COVID-19 for at least two years, shedding the virus into the sewer system. "Scientists search for patient with rare, long-term COVID strain in multiple states"

More than 30 cryptic Covid strains have been found in 13 US states, including New York, California, and Florida, by a team of scientists from the University of Missouri who have been tracking these strains by testing wastewater samples across the country. These viruses are being harbored by people known as 'long-haulers', patients who struggle to clear Covid infection for months or even years, giving the virus an unusually long window to mutate. The virologist leading the research warns that the strains are so mutated they would instantly be classed 'variants of concern' if they were to start spreading.
