Provisional data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that suicide deaths in the United States reached a record high in 2022, with at least 49,449 lives lost due to intentional self-harm. The suicide rate spiked, surpassing the previous record from 2018, and firearms were involved in over half of all suicides. A separate report highlights that gun-related suicides were the driving factor behind the recent rise in suicide rates. Despite the launch of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which has answered nearly 5 million calls, texts, and online chat messages, the majority of adults in the US are unaware of its existence.
