"Alarming Surge: US Suicide Deaths Hit Record High in 2022, Reveals Latest Data"
Provisional data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reveals that suicide deaths in the United States reached a record high in 2022, with at least 49,449 lives lost due to intentional self-harm. The suicide rate spiked, surpassing the previous record from 2018, and firearms were involved in over half of all suicides. A separate report highlights that gun-related suicides were the driving factor behind the recent rise in suicide rates. Despite the launch of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which has answered nearly 5 million calls, texts, and online chat messages, the majority of adults in the US are unaware of its existence. The demand for crisis counselors is increasing as more adults perceive the country to be experiencing a mental health crisis.
