Peru Court Orders Immediate Release of Ex-President Fujimori

Peru's top court, the Constitutional Tribunal, has ordered the release of former President Alberto Fujimori from prison, defying an international court's order to keep him behind bars for human rights violations. The court voted 3 to 1 to reinstate a presidential pardon granted to Fujimori in 2017, despite the Inter-American Court of Human Rights finding that the pardon violated the rights of his victims. Fujimori's lawyer stated that he will most likely be released on Wednesday. This decision has raised concerns about institutional decay and impunity in Peru, which has experienced political crises in recent years.

Donald Tusk's eligibility for office in Poland questioned.

Polish President Andrzej Duda has signed a highly contentious draft law that foresees the creation of a state commission to investigate Russia's influence "on the internal security of the Republic of Poland in the years 2007–2022." The opposition has dubbed the bill "Lex Tusk" and sees it as a direct attempt to torpedo the candidacy of former PM and former President of the European Council Donald Tusk, the opposition politician with the best prospects in this fall's parliamentary election. The new commission will have more powers than a parliamentary committee of inquiry and there are fears that it would use these sweeping powers to effectively block Tusk from running for office.

Polish President Duda signs bill targeting Russian influence.

Polish President Andrzej Duda plans to sign a bill that creates a commission to investigate Russian influence on Polish politicians. Critics argue that the commission could be used to remove rivals of the ruling right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party, specifically opposition leader and former Prime Minister Donald Tusk. The bill allows for the creation of a powerful panel that would investigate potential Russian influence in Polish politics from 2007 to 2022. Legal experts said that the bill violates Poland's constitution and had urged Duda not to sign it.
