Peru Court Orders Immediate Release of Ex-President Fujimori
Peru's top court, the Constitutional Tribunal, has ordered the release of former President Alberto Fujimori from prison, defying an international court's order to keep him behind bars for human rights violations. The court voted 3 to 1 to reinstate a presidential pardon granted to Fujimori in 2017, despite the Inter-American Court of Human Rights finding that the pardon violated the rights of his victims. Fujimori's lawyer stated that he will most likely be released on Wednesday. This decision has raised concerns about institutional decay and impunity in Peru, which has experienced political crises in recent years.
