GOP reaches deal to end impasse and move forward on House bills.

House Republicans reacted with frustration and "f-bombs" to an agreement to end a stalemate over adopting rules that dictate floor debate and votes. The agreement was made during a meeting between Speaker Kevin McCarthy and conservative rebels, but members from other factions were not included. The rebels got McCarthy to agree to write fiscal 2024 spending measures at fiscal 2022 levels, which could lead to a government shutdown in September. McCarthy's agreement to change the rules for motions to replace the speaker is also prompting shutdown worries.

McCarthy faces Trump indictment and conservative rebellion while comparing Biden and Trump document locations.

Conservative House Republicans have agreed to end their blockade of the House floor after GOP leaders agreed to reassess the agreement they landed with leadership during January’s speakership race, to more closely involve the right flank in big negotiations and to try to cut spending below the recent debt deal. In return, conservatives will help advance bills nixing pistol brace and gas stove regulations. However, the GOP’s broader fight over government funding is still a work in progress. GOP Leadership Struggles with Internal Divisions and Legislative Gridlock.

Speaker Kevin McCarthy says the conservative lawmakers who blocked a procedural vote on the House floor earlier this week have not outlined any specific demands. The dissenting lawmakers, including members of the House Freedom Caucus, have voiced anger over the debt limit deal struck between McCarthy and President Biden and accused GOP leadership of exacting revenge on one member who tried to block the bill from coming to the floor. McCarthy's thin majority in the House puts him in a precarious position, only being able to lose a handful of GOP votes to still pass a bill with no Democratic support.

GOP's Internal Divisions Emerge Over Gas Stove Bills and Leadership Revenge

Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy's control over the House GOP is being tested by a small faction of conservative rebels who are causing chaos and blocking legislation. McCarthy's debt ceiling deal with President Biden was opposed by approximately one-third of House Republicans, and now his hard-right antagonists are retaliating by blocking bills from the floor. McCarthy's speakership is on borrowed time, and any bipartisan outcome in the House puts him in peril. The conservative faction's strategy seems less precise, with little clue as to what they are hoping for next. McCarthy insists he can get through this and remain the speaker.
