Hoboken Mayor Bhalla Takes on Rep. Menendez in NJ Congressional Primary

Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla has officially launched his congressional campaign, challenging U.S. Rep. Rob Menendez in the 8th District primary. Bhalla emphasized the need for new voices and leadership to address issues such as healthcare, climate change, women's reproductive rights, and inequality. He highlighted his Sikh faith and personal experiences with discrimination, expressing his belief in the American Dream. Menendez welcomed Bhalla into the race but questioned his motives, citing Bhalla's recent loss of control in the city council. Bhalla has raised $509,000 so far but has not filed paperwork with the FEC. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, who has called for Menendez's resignation, has not indicated support for Bhalla or any other challenger.

FBI violated surveillance rules in investigating Jan. 6 riot and BLM protests

The FBI violated its own standards when searching a database of foreign intelligence for information related to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and racial justice protests in 2020, according to a court order released on Friday. The violations, which also included improper searches of donors to a congressional campaign, predated corrective measures that started in the summer of 2021. The revelations could complicate FBI and Justice Department efforts to receive congressional reauthorization of a warrantless surveillance program that law enforcement officials say is needed to counter terrorism, espionage, and international cybercrime.
