Fort Polk renamed after WWI hero Sgt. Henry Johnson.

Louisiana's Fort Polk military base will be renamed Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Johnson in honor of Sgt. William Henry Johnson, a Black US soldier during World War I who fought off about two dozen Germans alone, killing at least four. The renaming is part of an effort to strip Confederate leaders of the honor. Several other military bases have been renamed recently to honor people of color who made significant contributions with their service.

Fort Bragg renamed Fort Liberty in honor of new tradition.

The US Army is set to rename Fort Bragg, one of the largest military installations in the world, to Fort Liberty. Fort Lee renamed to honor Black Army trailblazers.

The US Army has renamed Virginia's Fort Lee military base as Fort Gregg-Adams in honor of two Black service members, Lt. Gen. Arthur Gregg and Lt. Col. Charity Adams, following a push to rename bases named after Confederate leaders. Gregg helped desegregate the Army and will be the only living person in modern Army history to have an installation named after him. Adams served as the first Black officer in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps and led the first all-Black WAC unit to serve overseas in Europe during World War II.
