Fort Bragg renamed Fort Liberty in Army's Confederate name change

Fort Bragg has been officially renamed Fort Liberty in a ceremony that some veterans said was a small but important step in making the U.S. Army more welcoming to current and prospective Black service members. The change was part of a broad Department of Defense initiative, motivated by the 2020 George Floyd protests, to rename military installations that had been named after Confederate soldiers. The cost to rename Fort Bragg will total about $8 million, and most front-facing signage has been changed but the process is ongoing.

Fort Lee renamed to honor Black Army trailblazers.

The US Army has renamed Virginia's Fort Lee military base as Fort Gregg-Adams in honor of two Black service members, Lt. Gen. Arthur Gregg and Lt. Col. Charity Adams, following a push to rename bases named after Confederate leaders. Gregg helped desegregate the Army and will be the only living person in modern Army history to have an installation named after him. Adams served as the first Black officer in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps and led the first all-Black WAC unit to serve overseas in Europe during World War II.
