Maternal Mortality Surges in the U.S. During Pandemic, Experts Concerned.

The rate of maternal mortality in the US increased by more than one-third in 2021 compared to the previous year, with communities of color disproportionately affected, according to a report by the National Center for Health Statistics. The number of maternal deaths rose to 1,205 in 2021, up from 861 in 2020. The report did not mention the pandemic, but experts believe it played a role. The mortality rate was highest for Black women, at 69.9 deaths per 100,000 live births, which was 2.6 times the rate for White women. Chronic conditions, racism, and the pandemic are all factors contributing to maternal mortality rates.
