The Future of Race and Ethnicity in College Admissions.
The Common App will allow colleges to hide information on race and ethnicity in admissions applications, in anticipation of a possible Supreme Court ruling against race-conscious admissions. The move could protect universities from litigation, but may also put pressure on applicants to signal their racial and ethnic background through other means, such as essays or teacher recommendations. The scope of the court's decision is unknown, but the justices showed a keen interest in the use of race boxes during oral arguments last fall.
