Algae-Derived UV Molecules Show Surprising Skin and Heart Health Potential
Lab studies show algae- and cyanobacteria–produced mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), known for UV protection, can also inhibit the blood-pressure–regulating enzyme ACE and exhibit antioxidant, anti-glycation, and collagenase-inhibiting activities, with distinct MAAs showing different strengths. While promising for skincare ingredients and functional foods, further in vivo research is needed to confirm health benefits and effective dosing.
