US Offshore Wind Farms Powering the Grid: Historic Milestones Reached in New York and Massachusetts
The South Fork Wind farm off the coast of New York has become the first utility-scale offshore wind farm to generate power in the US. The project has installed its first operational wind turbine, with all 12 turbines expected to be installed by early 2024. The energy produced will be sold to the Long Island Power Authority under a 20-year agreement. The 130-megawatt wind farm will power 70,000 homes in New York and eliminate up to 6 million tons of carbon emissions over 25 years. Danish company Ørsted is jointly developing the project with Eversource.
