Civil rights lawyers retained by family of Black teen shot after ringing wrong doorbell
The family of a Black teenager who was shot after ringing the wrong doorbell has hired civil rights lawyers Lee Merritt and Ben Crump. The 16-year-old was shot just before 10 p.m. Thursday and is said to be stable at a hospital. The shooter, who is a white man, was released by authorities in Kansas City, Missouri, prompting criticism from the lawyers. The incident has sparked demonstrations, and journalist and justice reform advocate Shaun King has taken up the victim's cause. The shooter was released because of Missouri's stand-your-ground law, but police are investigating and plan to present the case to the prosecutor.
