Hong Kong's Pro-Democracy Parties Disband Amid China's Crackdown.

The Hong Kong Civic Party, one of the territory's most prominent pro-democracy groups, has disbanded due to a leadership vacuum after its members were squeezed out of local councils and charged under Hong Kong's national security law, introduced by China in 2020. The decision is another blow to the city's already beleaguered democratic opposition under pressure from China, which has largely sidelined democrats from local politics through an overhaul of the electoral system and the national security law.

Hong Kong's Civic Party disbands amid China's security crackdown.

The Civic Party, one of Hong Kong's largest pro-democracy groups, has voted to disband following a crackdown on dissent by China. Several of its key members were arrested or fled into exile in recent years. The party was known for representing professionals including lawyers and accountants and was seen as a more moderate alternative to the larger Democratic Party, which is still running. Several members have faced prosecution for taking part in the pro-democracy protests against Beijing's control, which began in 2019. Following the introduction of the controversial national security law, four of its lawmakers were ousted from the Legislative Council in 2020, accused of being "unpatriotic".

Hong Kong's Civic Party, a Prominent Pro-Democracy Group, Disbands Amid Chinese Crackdown.

The Civic party, one of Hong Kong's most prominent pro-democracy groups, has voted to disband due to a leadership vacuum and members being charged under Beijing's national security law. The party was founded in 2006 by professional elites who wanted to promote democratisation and civil society in Hong Kong. Since 2019, half a dozen of the party's key members have faced criminal convictions for taking part in demonstrations and attempting to raise funds for protesters. The disbandment of the party is seen as a symbol of the end of Hong Kong's nativistic democracy movement, but the movement was not meaningless as it mobilised many people and amassed social capital.

The Civic Party, one of Hong Kong's major democratic parties, has announced its disbandment after a vote by its members, following pressure from China's national security law and overhaul of the electoral system. The party was known for representing professionals in Hong Kong and was considered a more moderate democratic voice. China's measures have been criticized for eroding the city's democracy and freedoms, and for consolidating Beijing's increasingly authoritarian grip over the global financial hub.
