The upcoming coronation of King Charles III highlights the legacy of the British Empire, which includes centuries of exclusion, racism, and plundering of land, resources, and human beings on nearly every continent. While the monarchy is seeking to modernize with the changing religious contours of British society, the legacy of British imperialism remains unhealed. The members of the royal family have stopped short of offering a formal apology or support for any sort of reparations. The marriage of church and state that a British coronation represents should be viewed with caution, and efforts should be made to ensure that the church in the U.S. retains its independence and prophetic witness.

Lawmakers in Texas have advanced a proposal to require every classroom in the state to display the Ten Commandments prominently. A parallel bill would also require schools to set aside time every day for students and employees to read the Bible or other religious manuscripts, or to pray. The bills have the backing of Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who describes himself as “a Christian first, conservative second and Republican third”. Opponents argue that the proposals violate the separation of church and state.

Oklahoma authorities have delayed a decision on a Catholic-led bid to open the country's first publicly funded religious charter school, which is expected to spur a court fight over constitutional limits between church and state. The state charter school board voted against approving the application to open a public campus that teaches students religious tenets just like a private institution. However, the decision gives church leaders time to address board members' concerns, then refile their request before a new and final vote in several weeks.
