The upcoming coronation of King Charles III highlights the legacy of the British Empire, which includes centuries of exclusion, racism, and plundering of land, resources, and human beings on nearly every continent. While the monarchy is seeking to modernize with the changing religious contours of British society, the legacy of British imperialism remains unhealed. The bills have the backing of Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who describes himself as “a Christian first, conservative second and Republican third”. Opponents argue that the proposals violate the separation of church and state.

However, the decision gives church leaders time to address board members' concerns, then refile their request before a new and final vote in several weeks.
