Kenyan police have begun exhuming remains from over a dozen suspected graves in the east of the country, believed to contain followers of a Christian cult who starved themselves to death in the belief that they would go to heaven. The leader of the Good News International Church, Paul Mackenzie, was arrested following a tip-off that suggested the existence of shallow graves belonging to at least 31 of his followers. Four of the 15 rescued worshipers died before they reached hospital.

Kenyan police have exhumed human remains from over a dozen suspected graves in the east of the country amid an investigation into followers of a Christian cult who believed they would go to heaven if they starved themselves to death. The police have rescued 15 members of the Good News International Church and arrested its leader, Paul Mackenzie, who has staged a hunger strike in his cell since his arrest last week. The police have found 21 bodies so far and more could yet be uncovered.
