Russian propagandists have been exploiting celebrity videos from the popular platform Cameo to spread disinformation, according to cybersecurity researchers at Microsoft. The videos, featuring celebrities such as Elijah Wood and Mike Tyson, were deceptively edited to push anti-Ukraine propaganda, with the celebrities unaware of the manipulation. The edited videos, which included emojis and links, were widely shared on pro-Russian social media accounts and amplified by state-backed Russian media outlets, falsely portraying them as messages appealing directly to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Microsoft researchers observed at least seven manipulated celebrity video messages since late July 2023, and Cameo stated that such videos would violate their community guidelines.
Disgraced former US congressman George Santos, who was expelled following an ethics report, is reportedly making six figures by selling personalized videos on the platform Cameo. Santos has increased the price of his videos to $400 each and has had a strong debut on the platform. Despite facing federal criminal charges, including wire fraud and identity theft, Santos has already sold videos to high-ranking officials. Some have criticized those who have purchased videos from Santos, highlighting his transphobic and fraudulent behavior.
The SAG-AFTRA strike has led to a surge in actors signing up for Cameo, a site where they can earn income by selling personalized celebrity videos to fans. Since the strike began, over 2,400 performers have joined or reactivated their Cameo accounts, a 137% increase. Many actors struggle financially, and Cameo provides a way for them to bridge the income gap. Notable unionized stars, including Fran Drescher and Alyssa Milano, have also reactivated their accounts. Cameo takes a 25% cut of the earnings, and prices range from $1 to $1,700. The platform allows actors to interact with fans and earn extra money during slower seasons.
