VW's Software Struggles Lead to Layoffs and Launch Delays

Volkswagen's software unit, Cariad, is facing significant delays in the launch of its new software architecture due to a round of layoffs. The planned job cuts will push back the release of VW's software architecture 1.2 by 16 to 18 months, impacting models such as the Porsche Macan EV and the Audi Q6 E-Tron. The layoffs also mean that Cariad will have to redevelop its 2.0 version from scratch. VW has struggled to compete with Tesla and other automakers in terms of software-defined vehicles, which offer additional revenue streams. Cariad's restructuring plan still requires approval from VW's works council.

Bentley Production Chief Takes Over Troubled VW Software Division

Volkswagen has replaced the CEO, CFO, and CTO of its software unit, Cariad, with Peter Bosch, who was previously responsible for manufacturing at VW's Bentley brand. The move comes as the automaker struggles to launch software in its vehicles and is at least two years behind schedule. Cariad was formed in 2020 to develop software-defined vehicles that compete with Tesla and generate revenue through in-car entertainment and services. The leadership shakeup is part of a restructuring effort to advance strategic, structural, and personnel development. VW is also adding two software experts to the board.

Volkswagen's software division undergoes leadership shakeup.

Volkswagen has appointed Bentley production chief Peter Bosch to lead its software subsidiary Cariad, dismissing all but one of the unit's current executive board members as the automaker tries to get the troubled division on track. Bosch, a former Oliver Wyman consultant who spent nearly seven years at the Volkswagen brand before moving to Bentley in 2017, will also take over financial management at Cariad. The sweeping changes come as Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume conducts a strategic review of every facet of the carmaker after taking over from former leader Herbert Diess last September, who set up Cariad but failed to put it on solid footing.

Volkswagen's Software Division: Current Status Update.

In 2019, Volkswagen set up a new division, CARIAD, to create a new unified automotive operating system for future VW Group EVs. The division had to work on three different systems simultaneously, and it hasn't gone smoothly. However, CARIAD's CEO, Dirk Hilgenberg, believes that the idea is still right, and they are in the final stretch of developing E3 1.2, which is destined for more upmarket EVs from Audi and Porsche, using the upcoming PPE platform. The unified OS, called E3 2.0, would show up mid-decade in a new, unified platform across the entire VW Group.
