"Lightning strike ignites refinery tank, prompts evacuations in Calcasieu Parish"

A tank containing naphthalene caught fire at Calcasieu Refining after being struck by lightning. The tank had around 46,000 barrels of naphthalene, and the fire is being monitored by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and Phillips 66. An evacuation order has been issued for 1.5 miles around the plant, and a shelter-in-place extends 3 miles from the plant. No injuries have been reported, and two other tanks near the naphthalene tank are being cooled with water to prevent the fire from spreading.

Louisiana Refinery Fires Prompt Evacuations and Shelter-in-Place Orders

A shelter-in-place has been issued for a 3-mile radius around Calcasieu Refining due to a crude oil tank fire caused by a lightning strike. A mandatory evacuation has been issued for a 1.5-mile radius of the refinery, including the Graywood subdivision. The fire is expected to be put out by 2 a.m. on Sunday, June 4. The Burton Coliseum is open as a shelter for those forced to evacuate or in the area of the shelter-in-place. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has guidelines for staying safe during a shelter-in-place order.
