All southbound lanes of Interstate 5 in Portland, Oregon were closed for emergency bridge joint repair after a failure was discovered. Traffic is being diverted onto southbound Interstate 405, and the closure may last until midnight. The Oregon Department of Transportation stated that the issue is due to regular wear and tear, with no expected structural damage, and crews are working to repair the joint to ensure safety for drivers.
Engineers are analyzing repair plans for the Kentucky approach to the Sherman Minton Bridge in order to reopen two-way traffic on Interstate 64. The bridge was closed due to necessary repairs to a bearing and pier supporting the upper deck, which were not previously visible. Temporary repairs will be made to reopen the lower deck, while options are being evaluated for repairing the upper deck. No timeline has been set for reopening the upper deck, and motorists are advised to use alternate routes.
The Biden administration has announced a $72 million grant to overhaul the northbound span of D.C.'s 14th Street Bridge, which carries Interstate 395 from Arlington and handles over 88,000 vehicles a day. The project is part of nearly $300 million in new federal bridge spending directed to urban and rural communities. The bridge has gone without urgently needed repairs for decades, and the upgrade will address urgent safety and state of good repair concerns. The project will include replacing a deteriorating section, addressing cracks, repairing concrete and steel, replacing bearings and modifying piers.
