Revolutionary Brain Implants Enable Paralyzed Patients to Speak Again
A paralyzed woman who hadn't spoken for years after a stroke has regained the ability to communicate through AI implants. The procedure involved implanting electrodes in her brain, which intercepted her brain signals and generated a digital avatar that "speaks" her thoughts using a recorded copy of her voice. The avatar also uses facial expressions, making it more lifelike. This is the first time speech and facial expressions have been synthesized from brain signals. The AI system recognizes phonemes and decodes the brain signals into complete words at a rate of about 80 words per minute. The team is working on a wireless version, aiming to create a system that enables speech from brain signals in the future.
