Denver's Tattered Cover Bookstore Faces Bankruptcy, Store Closures, and Job Losses

Denver's iconic independent bookstore, Tattered Cover, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and will close three of its locations by November. The closures will result in the elimination of 27 jobs, about one-quarter of the company's workforce. Tattered Cover ran a deficit of over $660,000 between January and September and owes more than $1 million to publishers. The bookstore's CEO cited the need to focus on quality over quantity and reduce the store's footprint as advice from major publishing houses. The bankruptcy filing comes less than a year after the death of the former owner, Joyce Meskis, and follows allegations of workplace bullying and ageism during the tenure of the previous CEO.

The fine is based on Hungary's controversial 2021 "child protection" law, which has been criticized as an attempt to stigmatize LGBTQ people. The European Union has backed legal action against the law, and the fine comes just before the Budapest Pride march.

Controversy Surrounds Drag Story Hours in Upstate New York

The Drag Story Hour held at a local bookstore in Pittsford, organized by Pittsford CommUNITY, received a big show of support from residents and members of the LGBTQ-plus community. The event was moved to the bookstore after the Town of Pittsford said they would have to pay upwards of $8,000 in security fees. Performers read to children about crayons and farm animals, and encouraged them to be themselves and love themselves. The Town of Pittsford eventually reversed its decision to charge the security fees, and a second Drag Story Time will be held on April 23 at the community center.
