"Potential Transmission of Alzheimer's Disease Through Medical Procedures"
A new study from the University of British Columbia suggests that Alzheimer's disease may be spread through blood transfusions and transplants of biological matter from individuals with hereditary Alzheimer's to healthy individuals. Lab experiments with mice and stem cells showed that healthy mice developed signs of cognitive decline and brain changes characteristic of Alzheimer's after receiving stem cells from Alzheimer's-carrying mice. This challenges previous assumptions about the disease's pathology and suggests the need for better screening of donors for Alzheimer's in blood, organ, and tissue transplants.
