HIV Outbreak Traced to New Mexico Spa's "Vampire Facial"
Another case of HIV has been linked to a vampire facial treatment offered at a now-closed medical spa in New Mexico. The VIP Beauty Salon and Spa in Albuquerque had previously closed in 2018 after two clients tested positive for HIV following the facials. In March, another former customer tested positive for the virus, bringing the total number of HIV infections connected to the spa to five. Health officials are urging former clients to get tested for blood-borne infections, even if they initially tested negative. The owner of the spa has pleaded guilty to practicing medicine without a license and has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison.
