"Pakistan's Blasphemy Law Sparks Church Arsons and Arrests"
Pakistan's blasphemy law, which punishes derogatory remarks against the Prophet Muhammad with death or imprisonment, is frequently misused to target religious minorities and settle personal scores. Vigilante mobs have lynched dozens of people accused of blasphemy, even before a trial takes place. Since 1990, at least 85 people have been murdered in relation to blasphemy allegations. Judges face pressure to hand down convictions, and local police often stand aside during anti-blasphemy violence. Blasphemy allegations are often used as a way to pressure opponents, including by top political leaders. Religious minorities, particularly Christians, are at a heightened risk.
