Amazon has launched a new Amazon One app on iOS and Android, allowing users to sign up for its palm recognition service directly from their phones. The service, which uses generative AI to analyze palm vein structure, is available at Whole Foods stores, Panera Bread locations, stadiums, airports, fitness centers, and convenience stores. While the technology has raised privacy concerns, Amazon assures that palm and vein images are immediately encrypted and sent to a highly secure zone in the AWS Cloud. The app includes additional spoof detection and does not allow users to save or download palm images to their phones.
The face unlock feature on the Pixel 8 Pro is a significant improvement over the in-display fingerprint reader, which can be slow and prone to misreads. The face unlock not only allows users to unlock their phones but also provides access to secure areas like banking apps and password managers. It is fast and convenient, often outperforming the fingerprint reader. Users can enable face unlock in the device settings and add their face alongside fingerprints for added security.

The upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro series are expected to bring several upgrades, but one disappointing omission is the absence of Touch ID. While Apple has touted the security and convenience of Face ID, many users still prefer the convenience of a fingerprint scanner. With other smartphone manufacturers incorporating in-display or power button fingerprint scanners, there is no practical reason why Apple couldn't offer both options. Allowing users to choose between Face ID, Touch ID, or disabling biometric security altogether would provide greater personalization. However, it remains to be seen if Apple will listen to the demand for Touch ID or continue to prioritize Face ID.
A Reddit user has discovered a workaround for the under-display fingerprint scanner on Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 series phones. By wiping their finger on the outside of their nose, the scanner picks up enough oils or schmutz to recognize the print. Another suggestion is to run fingers through hair before trying the scanner. Some users have been lucky enough not to have issues with the scanner. The upcoming Pixel 8 line is rumored to have an ultrasonic under-display fingerprint scanner. The recently unveiled Pixel Fold will use a side-mounted fingerprint sensor integrated with the power button.
