Challenging the Biologically Based Perspective on Mental Disorders for Effective Therapy

A study from Yale University reveals that the belief that psychotherapy is less effective for mental disorders assumed to be biologically caused is prevalent among both the general public and mental health clinicians. The study identifies three misconceptions that contribute to this belief: neurodualism, controllability, and discounting of psychological causes. The research shows that endorsing these misconceptions leads to a diminished perception of the effectiveness of psychotherapy for biologically attributed mental disorders. The study highlights the need to challenge these misconceptions and promote a more comprehensive understanding of mental health to ensure effective treatment approaches.
