Declassified Spy Images Unveil Historic Battle Site in Iraq
Researchers have pinpointed the site of the ancient Battle of al-Qadisiyyah in Iraq using declassified U.S. spy satellite images from the 1970s. The battle, a significant victory for Arab Muslim forces over the Sasanian Empire in 636 AD, marked the start of Islamic rule in Persia. The discovery, led by Dr. William Deadman and published in Antiquity, aligns with historical texts and includes features like a double wall and pottery shards from the era. This research is part of the EAMENA project, focusing on endangered archaeology in the Middle East.
