Navy Shipbuilders' Union Ratifies 3-Year Labor Pact at Bath Iron Works

The largest union at Navy shipbuilder Bath Iron Works in Maine has approved a new three-year contract, avoiding a potential strike. The contract includes pay raises ranging from 2.6% to 9.6% in the first year, followed by increases of 5% in the second year and 4% in the third. Workers will also receive increased contributions to their national pension plan, while health insurance costs will rise. The agreement was supported by 72% of union members in online voting. The shipyard, which builds guided-missile destroyers, is a major employer in the state with 6,700 workers.

Bath Iron Works Union Approves New Contract, Avoiding Strike Replay

The contract includes the largest pay raises in the union's history, ranging from 4% to 9.5% in the first year. General Dynamics, the owner of the shipyard, has agreed to increase 401(k) contributions and offer a Roth 401(k) starting in 2024. The contract also includes higher health insurance premiums and the elimination of an unpaid week off in December. The previous strike and the pandemic had caused delays in ship production, but production has since increased.

US Navy Awards Ingalls and Bath Iron Works Multi-Year Contract for Arleigh Burke Destroyers

The U.S. Navy has awarded contracts to Ingalls Shipbuilding and Bath Iron Works to build a total of nine Arleigh Burke-class Flight III guided-missile destroyers over the next five years. Ingalls Shipbuilding will construct six of the destroyers, while Bath Iron Works will build the remaining three. The Flight III destroyers, equipped with the AN/SPY-6 Air and Missile Defense Radar, will replace the Ticonderoga-class cruisers as the primary air defense platform for carrier strike groups. The contracts were awarded through a limited competition to ensure the best price for the government and taxpayers. The total value of the contract was not disclosed.
