Captivating Supermoon Spectacles Illuminate Skies Across the Globe

The first of two full supermoons in August, known as the Sturgeon Moon, appeared in the night sky on Tuesday. The Sturgeon Moon is the second of four consecutive full supermoons this year and is named after the Algonquin tribes' tradition of naming each month's moon. The next full moon on August 30 will be a blue moon, the second full moon within one month, which is a rare occurrence.

"August Delights: Two Supermoons and a Sturgeon Full Moon Await"

August kicks off with the Full Sturgeon Moon, the first of two supermoons this month. The Sturgeon Moon rises on August 1st and sets on August 3rd, while the Full Blue Moon will rise on August 30th. These full moons are part of a chain of four supermoons that began in July. Supermoons occur when the moon is in the full moon phase and at its closest point to Earth, resulting in a 30% increase in brightness and a 14% increase in size. The Sturgeon Moon will be 222,158 miles away from Earth, while the Blue Moon will be around 222,043 miles away. The "summer of supermoons" will end on September 28th with the Full Corn Moon.
