Two new studies challenge the long-held assumption that the majority of global dust emissions come from North African deserts, revealing that dust emissions vary by season and across hemispheres. Existing models are outdated and inaccurate, with the total amount of dust emissions worldwide much lower than previously thought. The studies propose a new, more sensitive model based on satellite observations to improve climate change projections and scientific understanding of atmospheric dust's impact on both climate and human health.
