Breaking Barriers: Asian Breast Cancer Survivors Shatter Taboos
Breast cancer remains a taboo topic in the Asian community, leading to lower rates of breast screening and reduced survival rates among south Asian women compared to white women. Cultural and language barriers, as well as fear and fatalism surrounding cancer, contribute to the reluctance to discuss and address the disease. Asian survivors like Sonia Bhandal, Sania Ahmed, and Dipika Saggi are working to raise awareness and encourage better healthcare practices within their communities, challenging societal norms and perceptions. Younger members of the community play a crucial role in changing mindsets and promoting breast awareness.
